Marc Newson was born in 1962 in Sydney, Australia. During his childhood, he travelled a lot through Europe and Asia After graduating in 1984 from the College of Art in Sydney in Sculptury and jewellery, he moved to Tokyo. There, he designed until 1991 for Japanese Teruo Kurosaki and his company Idée objects like the Orgone Lounge, Black Hole Table and Felt Chair which brought him fame not only in Asia but also in Europe.
In 1991, Newson founded his own Studio in Paris, named Pod which merged in 1994 with the Swiss watch manufacturer Ike to “Ikepod”. Next to watches, Newson created limited series of different aluminium furniture like the Event Horizon Table and the Orgone Chair.
Particularly during the 1990s, Newson grew to one of the most influencing and accredited designer. Also, through his work for several renowned manufacturers like Cappelini, Flos or Moroso, he became international famous. Furthermore, he designed several interiors for restaurants (among others: Coast in London, Manchester’ s Mash & Air, Osman in Cologne, Canteen in Manhattan) and stores (among others Pod Bar in Tokyo, Crocodile Boutique in Hong Kong) and the Syn –Sound Studio in Tokyo, just to mention a few.
In 1997, the cosmopolitan went to London where he founded together with Benjamin DeHaan the company Marc Newson Ltd. Since that time, he designs successful objects like glassware for Iittala, kitchen and bathroom accessories for Alessi, or furniture for Flos.
The range of products he created goes from bicycles (MN01 for Biomega) and mobile phones (for Japan’s KDDI) to the interior of the Falcon 900B private jet and the clothes of the Australian Olympic team. Multifaceted are also the names of companies, Marc Newson used to work for so far. Next to the so far mentioned design-manufacturers Alessi, Flos, Iittala or Magis, also clothing companies like Nike or G-Star or car manufacturer Ford were his customers.
It is hard to classify the design of the native Australian to the different styles due to showing biomorphic as well as futuristic aspects in his work. Newson’s creations play with the fantasy, feelings and emotions of the consumers and put the former visions of the past into objects of the presence.
Numerous of the objects designed by Marc Newson are nowadays represented in the most famous design museums in Paris, New York, London and Germany.
