The German Richard Sapper, living in Italy, is one of the most significant designers and university professors of the past 30 years. His career started when, in the beginning of the 60’s, he created door handles and external mirrors for the legendary Mercedes Benz 330 SL Roadster.
Since the beginning of the 60’s, he has been developing successful creations for Brionvega, like the TV “Doney” and the radio TS 205 – sometimes in cooperation with Marco Zanuso. The functional desk light “Tizio”, which he created for the producer Artemide in 1970, and the playful water kettle “Bollitore” with the melodious whistle for Alessi, also belong to his works.
"Giving form a meaning" is how Sapper expresses his methodological approach, thereby distancing himself from the tradition of German functionalists with their leitmotif of "Form Follows Function".
